Intended learning outcomes (Knowledges, skills and competencies to be developed by the students)

At the end of the course the student should be able to:

- Recognise the polysemic nature of the term "image" and its multiple approaches.
- Understand the importance of theory for the study of the image.
- Analyze a graphic/audiovisual image relating their formal elements with the content.
- Recognise the main features of the graphic/audiovisual images conveyed by the media in contemporary Western context.
- Critically reflect on the image as a social representation.

Syllabus

1. The civilization of the image: the omnipresence of the image and the importance of understanding how the image communicates and transmits its messages.
2. What is an image? The concept of image and its problematisation.
3. The image and the semiotic theory.
4. The role of the image as reproduction or as construction of the reality: stereotypes.
5. The language of the image: the case of photojournalism.
6. Elements for image analysis: issues and methods.
7. Image analysis in the contemporary cultural context.


Teaching methodologies

The sessions are focused on presentation of concepts, debates and practical tasks. Students are invited to submit the results of the different activities.

Assessment methodologies and evidences

The student's evaluation is continuous and summative including:

a) Test: 40%
b) Group work: 40%
c) Tasks in class: 20%
